Four ports, one quiet week of dwell times
In the last week of October, median import dwell time ranged from 2.1 to 5.4 days across four European and US ports. The number to watch is not the median.

Dwell time is the number of days an import container sits inside a terminal between discharge and gate-out. It is published, in some form, by most large terminals, and it is almost always quoted as a median. I collected the figures for four ports in the last week of October and want to show why I think the median is the wrong place to look.
The median describes a typical box. The people who call me are not holding typical boxes.
